Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) was founded by the entrepreneur Prof. Dr. Michael Otto in 2005. Its parent organisation is the Hamburg-based Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF).
CmiA aims to improve the living conditions of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa while protecting the environment and increasing transparency in the textile supply chain. Instead of collecting donations, it follows the principle of helping people to help themselves through trade: CmiA-certified cotton is in demand in the global market, with a worldwide alliance of textile companies and brands paying a licensing fee to use the CmiA seal. CmiA then reinvests the licensing revenue towards meeting its objectives, as outlined above. Textiles certified by Cotton made in Africa are marked with a small label for easy identification by consumers.
