New York – Market sources point out that on average, retailers are offering 5 – 20 percent discount to students to lure them with their back-to-school sales offers.

The month-long sales season has traditionally seen retailers offering personalized offers to students and parents, their biggest target audiences for this campaign. Those discounts typically range between 5 percent and 20 percent. Amongst the brands offering such discounts are Nike, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21 and J. Crew.

A number of retailers have stipulations to receive the discount, such as the discount is only available in-store or only valid with a student email address. As they develop their programs, retailers should consider how their promotion can foster customer loyalty, says Lauren Freedman, Internet Retailer’s senior consumer insights analyst, as reported by ‘Digital Commerce 360’.

“It’s hard to secure loyalty from shoppers with a discount that’s typically around 10 percent given that many retailers offer better promotions throughout the year,” Freedman says. “Additionally, any barriers to participation such as stores-only or app-only can also put a damper on shopping those retailers.”
