Trendstop brings FashionUnited readers a first look at how designers are utilising sustainable materials and incorporating them into their collections for Fall Winter 2022.
Designing sustainably can be a challenge but it’s essential to supporting a healthier, more renewable planet and is an important topic amongst ever more mindful, eco-conscious consumers. Whilst technological advances are producing new sustainable concepts, many designers have looked at the resources they already have. Recycled materials, repurposed deadstock and a ‘make do and mend’ ethos is helping consumers and the industry become a cleaner and greener.
Reinvent, Reuse, Recycle
Exploring the archives to give past garments a second life offers designers the opportunity to create one-of-a-kind pieces with a uniquely hybrid feel. Elements of different items are pieced and patched together into new apparel with Fair Isle sweaters adding tactile cosiness to jacket panels and satin linings becoming statement pockets. A considered mix of textures, prints and finishes are put together using artisanal crafting techniques for an elevated reworking of previous iterations.
Creative Deadstock Plaid
Classic plaids are updated via the creative use of deadstock and waste fabric offcuts. Traditional tartan swatches are fused with sporty sweats or laser cut and layered to create highly contemporary dresses. Blending strong checks with faded, old fashioned florals nods to heritage themes with a modern twist coming from their application to denim jacket/shirt hybrids.
Recycled Space Dye
Space dye knits are reinvented with an upcycled look that brings contrasting elements together, creating colour and pattern blocked panels, accent collars and cuffs. Discarded knitwear pieces are reconfigured into new sweaters for a patchwork effect whilst flecked yarns are recycled and remade into full cardigans or used as detailing panels and hemline trims to add a crafty look to sporty pieces.
