30 Sustainability efforts of the fashion industry in June 2021

Sustainability continues to be one of the hottest topics in the fashion industry, with each month bringing new innovations and conscious collaborations. In this article, FashionUnited takes a look back at some of the biggest sustainable news from June.

1. LVMH to recycle textiles in partnership with weturn

LVMH has solidified a partnership between several of its fashion Maisons and weturn, a company that offers an innovative recycling chain dedicated to unsold textiles from major fashion houses.

2. Primark launches skinny jeans with Repreve Our Ocean

Budget fashion chain Primark has expanded its sustainable ‘Primark Cares’ range with new skinny jeans in partnership with material innovators Unifi, Inc and its Repreve Our Ocean fibre, which turns throwaway plastic into denim.

3. Gym+Coffee partners with Valérius Hub on sustainable range

Irish athleisure brand Gym+Coffee has partnered with the Valérius Hub, located in Portugal, to create a limited-edition sustainable collection.

4. Nasty Gal launches sustainable collection with Jen Ceballos

Nasty Gal has launched a sustainable-focused collection with stylist and model Jen Ceballos of Endlessly Love Club. The limited-edition 40 piece drop comprises clothing made from recycled fabrics, organic cotton and reworked vintage looks.

5. LVMH partners with Canopy on sustainable initiatives

LVMH has announced a new partnership with environmental not-for-profit Canopy as it looks to strengthen its commitment to forest conservation.

6. The Industry We Want panel brings stakeholders across supply chain together

A recent event by The Industry We Want (TIWW), an initiative launched by Fair Wear in January together with the Ethical Trading Initiative, was well attended, showing that the initiative’s goal - bringing industry stakeholders together to work on better labour conditions in the garment industry - is shared by many.

7. E-tailer Mytheresa teams up with Vestiaire Collective for resale service

Luxury fashion e-tailer Mytheresa has teamed up with resale platform Vestiaire Collective to launch a new second-hand fashion service. The tie-up will allow Mytheresa customers to use a dedicated web interface to sell their second-hand fashion - the process of which will be run by Vestiaire Collective.

8. Stella McCartney launches most sustainable collection to date

British fashion brand Stella McCartney has launched its Autumn 2021 collection - the most sustainable yet, alongside a new campaign. The ‘Our time has come’ campaign features a fantasy of animals rewilding London, living freely among humans while donning sustainable luxury pieces.

9. Mr Porter launches capsule collection, adds new section for small sustainable labels

Mr Porter has launched a new multi-brand capsule collection called ‘Small World’, and has also introduced a new section to its website, called ‘Craftsmanship Code’, which highlights small brands with a purpose.

10. Rens offers first sneakers made from coffee grounds

In search of cool, sustainable brands, FashionUnited stumbled across Rens, a Finnish athleisure brand that makes the world’s first sneaker from coffee grounds and recycled plastic. The Helsinki-based brand even won the 2021 Reddot Award for Outstanding Product Design for its innovation.

11. Animal-free: Gucci introduces vegan sneaker

Gucci has launched a series of vegan sneaker options made from animal-free materials. The luxury giant on Thursday debuted new options of its Rhyton and New Ace sneakers, crafted primarily from Demetra.

12. The running shoe you can never really own: Cyclon by On

Produce, use, reuse - with its Cyclon running shoe, Swiss sports brand On closes the product cycle. The high-performance shoe is an item of clothing that you can never really own. When the running shoe reaches the end of its life, it is traded in at the manufacturer for a new pair.

13. Nike launches sustainable Happy Pineapple collection

Sportswear giant Nike has launched its Happy Pineapple collection, using piñatex instead of leather. Piñatex is a plant-based alternative to leather and is crafted by using pineapple leaves.

14. Lee Jeans announces new water-saving dye technique

Lee Jeans has announced a new water-saving dye technique called ‘Crystal Clear’ as part of its efforts to use lower impact dye processes across its ranges. The Kontoor Brands-owned label said the new technique “drastically” reduces the amount of chemicals needed to dye denim, making it easier to recycle the water from the dyeing process.

15. New sustainable clothing care device W'air launches

The first sustainable laundry device is launching on the market, the W’air, which is looking to revolutionise the way we wash our clothes with hydrodynamic technology.

16. Lindex pilots second-hand clothing scheme

Swedish retailer Lindex is piloting a new circular business model to launch second-hand clothing. In the pilot, Lindex has launched a take-back programme for its baby and kids outerwear where customers can send old items and receive a reward. The collected pieces will then be sold in a few selected Lindex stores in Sweden.

17. Sustainable Swedish brand Asket steps into womenswear

Sustainable Swedish brand Asket is branching out from its menswear roots with the launch of its first womenswear collection this summer. The six-year-old brand, which sells timeless menswear staples and encourages shoppers to have “smaller but better wardrobes”, announced it will begin by introducing six garments as part of a new permanent collection for women, which has been 24 months in the making.

18. Rixo adds sustainable swimwear

Womenswear brand Rixo has introduced numerous new categories in recent months, including bridal and bridesmaid collections, debut shoe range, and now it is adding its first sustainable swimwear line.

19. Sustainable bridesmaid dress brand Nola London launches

Nola London, a new sustainable bridesmaid dress brand, has been launched by a duo with thirty years combined buying and design experience from Topshop and Asos. Best friends Abigail Heinimann and Sophia Munro are looking to challenge the one-wear mindset of bridesmaid attire with Nola London by producing modern dresses that are stylish as well as sustainable.

20. Global Fashion Group goes carbon neutral

Online fashion retailer Global Fashion Group (GFG) has announced it has gone carbon neutral across its operations and outbound deliveries. The company said it achieved this by offsetting the emissions it generates by purchasing carbon credits from certified renewable energy projects located in China, India and Brazil where its operations and own-brand suppliers are based.

21. Burberry pledges to be climate positive by 2040

Burberry has pledged to become climate positive by 2040, going further than its earlier target to be net-zero by that same year. The company said it is the first luxury brand to set out the goal, which it will achieve by investing in key initiatives “to support wider climate change efforts beyond its value chain”.

22. American sportswear brand Brooks to reach zero carbon emissions by 2040

Brooks Running, the sports equipment company owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A), announced plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

23. Ralph Lauren reveals goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040

American fashion company Ralph Lauren has set a new goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The announcement is part of the company’s recently published Global Citizenship and Sustainability Report, which provides an update on its Design the Change initiative.

24. H&M joins EU Green Consumption Pledge Initiative

H&M has announced its commitment to the EU Commission’s Green Consumption Pledge Initiative, aiming to create a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.

25. Fashion for Good announces first recipient of the Good Fashion Fund

Amsterdam-based sustainable fashion initiative Fashion for Good has announced the first beneficiary of the Good Fashion Fund, which aims to drive sustainable manufacturing practices. Indian manufacturer Pratibha Syntex Limited, which supplies textiles and garments to fashion giants like C&A, H&M, Patagonia and Zara, has received the 4.5 million dollar, long-term loan.

26. Spinnova wins 2021 ANDAM Innovation Award

Finnish start-up Spinnova has been named the 2021 ANDAM Innovation Award winner for developing 100 percent sustainable textile fibre directly out of FSC-certified wood and waste streams without dissolving or other harmful chemical processes.

27. Zalando names finalists for sustainability award

Online fashion retailer Zalando has shortlisted Mother of Pearl, Nikolaj Storm Copenhagen and Teatum Jones for its sustainability award at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

28. Fashion for Good launches the Renewable Carbon Textiles Project

Sustainable fashion initiative Fashion for Good has launched a project to accelerate the development of Polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHA polymer fibres, a biosynthetic alternative to fossil-based fibres.

29. Ventile develops two new eco-fabrics

Sustainable textile manufacturer Ventile has launched two new fabrics as part of its growing Eco range. Ventile, known for its performance textiles worn by explorers such as Ranulph Finnes and Sir Edmund Hillary, has developed the Ventile Eco 420 and Ventile Eco 430, which are both machine washable 100 percent recycled cotton fabrics that challenge what is possible with coarse recycled yarns.

30. H&M Foundation announces virtual start-up collection

The H&M Foundation has announced the Billion Dollar Collection which showcases ten sustainable start-ups that the company believes can change the face of the fashion industry.
