UPDATE: A spokeswoman for Macy's had said that they "We are pleased with the outcome of the negotiations, and happy to report that a tentative agreement between Macy's and Local 1S for our workers has been reached, therefore averting a possible strike today."

Macy's has missed the midnight deadline on Wednesday for negotiating a new contract between union leaders for the 5000 workers at their Herald Square flagship and branch stores in Queens, the Bronx, and White Plains.

“Talks between the retail union representing Macy’s workers and company executives will continue this morning, with the goal of establishing the framework of a deal soon,” a spokesman for the union said.

A representative for Macy's wasn't immediately available for comment regarding the current situation around the negotiations.

If an agreement isn't reached, a strike will be carried out by Local 1S of the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union. Macy's Herald Square employees haven't held a strike since 1972.

Macy's is seeing the strike as something very possible, as this week they have taken out ads for temporary workers.

They have been renegotiating their three-year labor contract with the RWDSU since May 1, when the contract expired. The bargaining has continued as part of a 45 day extension period.

The union says that key issues at the bargaining table include affordable healthcare, adequate raise increases, and protection of retirement benefits. Union leaders say that the cost of health benefits for a single person is 75 dollars.
