London - Volcom is turning its sights on creating a new future which sees the label turning its sustainable commitments into actions. Following the results of a recent report from Volcom's parent company Kering, which focused on the group's 2012-2016 sustainability targets, the US brand has published its own update on its sustainability progress and a detailed plan which outlines its plan forward.

Until a new program called New Future, Volcom aligned itself within Kering's broader sustainability commitments and developed its own list of goals: undertaking a yearly Environmental profit & Loss (E P&L) analysis, reducing emissions, waste and water use, making Volcom surfing events Deep Blue certified, among others. Since then, Volcom has successfully followed through on four E P&L analyses, eliminated PVC for its product supply chain and increased its use of sustainable materials.

Now, working in partnership with Kering's sustainability team, Volcom has developed a new sustainability strategy named the New Future program. A 360-degree plan, driven by the brand's vision of Strong Oceans + Stable Climate + Smart Society, the new plan incorporates responsible manufacturing, impact evaluation, and giving back. The strategy also includes plans to source better fiber, increasing the amount of its use of recycled materials, New Future training to all employees and steps to moving to a closed loop cycle as some of its 2020 Sustainability Targets.

"As our efforts continue to deepen, we’d like to focus in on a meaningful pathway that will highlight our commitment to responsible manufacturing, drive favorable results in our E P&L, and resonate positively with our customers. We believe our New Future roadmap does just that," said Todd Hymel, CEO of Volcom in a statement. To help oversee its sustainability goals becoming a reality, Volcom has also brought on board new agency The Underswell to serve as its Sustainability Advisor.

Founded by former Volcom VP of Sustainability, Derek Sabori, The Underswell work to coordinate Volcom's global sustainability efforts. "It's up to us now, as a company to truly adopt and embrace sustainability as a tenant of our business, as a core value, and as a brand differentiating opportunity," added Hymel." I'm looking forward to the further strengthening of what we will continue to call our New Future program, and welcome Derek in his new role and wish him the best as he starts a new chapter."
