The Fall/Winter 2016-17 ready-to-wear catwalk shows are now officially in full swing, with the world's fashion capitals ready to host hundreds of catwalk shows by influential designer brands over the next three weeks. Kicking off the new season with a bang was New York, which came to a close today; as the city with the largest show schedule in the Fashion Week calendar, hordes of industry professionals braved subzero conditions to discover the latest styles for F/W16 womenswear. As part of their seasonal catwalk analysis, the Trendstop editors have pinpointed three standout collections from the New York runways. Lacoste, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Opening Ceremony all showcased directional collections, updating their women's fashion offerings with inspirational styles that respectively draw on influences from the past, present and future.

Retro Ski Lacoste

Heritage sports label Lacoste created a contemporary range with a retro undertone, revisiting styles in the brand's 80-year-strong archives to breathe new life into 70's looks. An après-ski aesthetic comes through with cosy velvet tracksuits and zip-up turtlenecks, while clean-cut culottes are layered over tall, slouchy leather boots. Sports stripes, tactile overcoats and slogan knits reinforce the wintry mood.

Eastern Military 3.1 Phillip Lim

Now in its 10th year, 3.1 Phillip Lim continues to cement its status as one of New York's strongest contemporary brands. Functional utility styles fuse with Eastern exoticism, as outerwear combines technical padding with kimono shapes, and military shackets incorporate floral embroidery. Other highlights include velvet booties, masculine tailoring and heritage fabric sportswear, all toned in muted earthy shades.

New York Future

From past and present to future, as Opening Ceremony envision the womenswear of the 22nd century winter. Surfaces make a statement with foiled or holographic finishes, while slicked-down hair creates a forward look with visor-like shades. Chunky layered knits and thigh-high boots add warmth, as relaxed tees and palazzo pants are set off with Space Age silver colourways.
