For brands, ‘heritage’ is a buzzword that has become something of a Holy Grail. It’s easy to think that, as a business, if you have a good company back story, you’re essentially halfway there. Great news then for Castañer, the Spanish brand that can be traced all the way back to Rafael Castañer, the first espadrilles shoe maker. Many a brand would kill for such an impressive history. Rafael Castañer was born in 1776, the year America won its independence. Around 150 years later, in 1927, his grandson Luis Castañer and his cousin Tomàs Serra founded the first shoe atelier.

During the Second World War, Spanish soldiers wore shoes with Castañer soles. The brand entered the world of fashion in the 1970s when a young man approached Lorenzo and Isabel Castañer at a trade fair looking for wedge espadrilles for his collection. This young man was none other than Yves Saint Laurent. Further international fashion houses followed and Castañer became the go-to producer for premium quality espadrilles.

The first store was opened in Barcelona in 1994 and was followed by others in Madrid, Paris, Saint Tropez and even as far afield as Tokyo. Word soon spread about the shoes’ quality craftsmanship and it didn’t take long before celebrities were lining up to get their hands on an original pair. Grace Kelly wore Castañer shoes with bast heels, as did Salvador Dalí, Pedro Almodóvar, Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz and Anne Hathaway. Today Castañer shoes are sold in over 50 countries, at Bergdorf Goodman and at Como Corso in Milan.

You can find Castañer at PREMIUM Berlin from 28-30 June in hall 5, stand D12.
