Galliano stripped of Legion of Honour award

British-born fashion designer John Galliano has been stripped

of his Legion of Honour award, which was given to the former Dior designer in 2010 for his services to the fashion industry.

The withdrawal order was passed by decree of French President François Hollande, as a result of the designer’s being found guilty of making racist and anti-Semitic insults last year.

Galliano had received the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, the highest accolade available in the order, but the decree dated August 20 confirmed that the honour would be withdrawn, which is apparently very rare.

Other fashion designers who have received the prestigious award include Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and Sonia Rykiel and last year it was reported that Anna Wintour was in line to receive it as well.
