Uniqlo, Japan's biggest clothing label is exploring options to begin sourcing its garment from India, according

to an official statement from the Indian government.

On Wednesday, the president and chief executive officer of Uniqlo's parent company, Fast Retailing, Tadashi Yanai reportedly met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Yanani also met with commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Indian clothing exporters.

“[Uniqlo] aims to source garments from India,” read a brief statement on the governments website. “Uniqlo currently produces the majority of its apparel in China, but the company has been looking to diversify its sourcing resources as production costs in China increase.”

The Japanese fashion retailer has been planning to enter the Indian market for some time now, and number of industry insiders believe that sourcing products from the country is a move in the right direction. Although Uniqlo currently have a number of stores in Asian countries such as China and South Korea, the fashion retailer has yet to open a store in India.

“As we continue to grow our business globally, we are considering to expand our manufacturing partnerships, to be able to best meet customer needs in a timely and efficient manner,” commented a Fast Retailing spokesperson to WWD. “No decisions regarding any new manufacturing partnerships have been made at this time.”
