New fashion school to open on FijiTo sharpen the talent of local designers Fiji Fashion Week is planning to start a fashion school which, will be focused on designing and innovative product development in both fashion as interior design, in the form of ideas, concepts, understanding of fabric and construction of designs.

Managing director Ellen Whippy Knight said the school would provide students with the industry knowledge and vocabulary to succeed in designing wearable clothes. "We hope to raise the understanding of designers, therefore, the fashion school will provide the best opportunity for our designers," she said. The Fiji Fashion school is expected to begin enrolment at the end of 2012.

As students learn to excel in designs, Ms Whippy-Knight said they had been encouraged to look outside the immediate context of fashion design and marketing to assess the needs of the ever-changing global economy.

"We Fijians have always been well-dressed and we have pride in the way we look, therefore, it's always easier for our designers to create western designs.

"Most designs displayed at the Fiji Fashion Show are wearable and this reflects the understanding of local designers.

"We're encouraging designers to come up with different designs and market their designs locally and internationally."
