The Fashion: Design and Construction programme at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gar has evolved in response to contemporary fashion culture and recent developments within the fashion design industry. The programme aims to develop students’ abilities and confidence in designing and constructing garments through practice-led experience and processes that foster the development of individual design identity. Class sizes are small and tutor contact is second to none.

The programme ensure that students develop a portfolio of fashion design work relevant to the current industry.

This programme develops reflective graduates who are highly creative, independent, enquiring individuals, versatile and capable of meeting its challenges and working effectively and successfully within this professional context. Graduate success is high, with many students developing their own fashion labels, while others have found employment designing within larger design houses or within the wider fashion sector.

BA (Hons) Fashion: Design & Construction

Programme Features:

  • You will study in a traditional art school, purpose built in the 1970s. Our art school offers you a friendly and supportive environment with opportunities to work across disciplines. You will work in a well-equipped workshop for pattern cutting and sewing with a staff team who have worked within many different areas of the industry.
  • The module structure is designed to provide you with opportunities to explore and apply methods used to communicate fashion ideas and concepts. It seeks to extend your knowledge of the key visual principles that govern the practice of applied apparel design, trend research/analysis and range building, whilst also enabling you to realise your design intentions through developing a range of skills. The programme allows you to access the latest technology for computer aided design and manufacturing process such as Gerber, CAD/CAM, digital print and also laser cutting technologies.
  • You can expect a varied programme of assignments that highlight the importance of technical skills within the industry. These are underpinned with strong industrial links which provide you with highly relevant vocational practice, involving brands such as; House of Fraser, River Island, Howies and George. The course is a member college of the prestigious British Fashion Council which gives colleges and students access to esteemed industry projects and internships.

The final year will provide you with the opportunity to exhibit your work at Graduate Fashion Week, London alongside national and international fashion graduates.

Progression and Employment:

Fashion design, fashion illustration, fashion buying, trend prediction, styling, visual merchandising, film/television costume design, pattern cutting, garment technology, sampling assistant, teacher/lecturer and post graduate study (MA, PhD.)

Programme Content:

  • Year 1 – A skills based year delivered through a series of workshops. The year comprises of eight modules including Design Production Processes, Design & Garment Construction, Developing Visual Language, Digital Processes and Creative Digital Practice (used within fashion), Study Skills & Developing a Critical and Contextual Language, Critical & Contextual Studies: Theories of Aesthetics and Creative Project.
  • Year 2 – A developmental year devised to allow you to apply the skills gained in year one to identify personal strengths and areas of interest within a range of industry relevant contexts. The year comprises of five modules: Live Projects, Design Competitions, Professional Skills, Visual & Material Culture and Specialist Project.
  • Year 3 – A personal negotiated brief which allows you to consolidate your practice and build a portfolio in preparation for future progression and personal ambitions. The year comprises of four modules all based upon individual projects: Visual Research Methodology, Theoretical Perspectives from Practice, Professional Skills: Enterprise & Employability and Major Project; culminating in an opportunity to showcase your work in a final degree show.

Method of Assessment

Assessment is on-going through workshop plenary sessions, critiques, formative and summative assessment with aural and written feedback.

Entry requirements

Tariff score points accepted: A minimum of 120 points or equivalent portfolio ability for mature applicants.

Selection procedures

All applicants need to apply online through UCAS, our UCAS code is C22. Offers will be made based on the UCAS application, predicted grades (if applicable), UCAS reference and one to one interview. Programme Directors interview every applicant and discuss your portfolio of artwork and ambitions with you. This is a vital part of our selection process to ensure that the course is right for you and you are right for the course. Due to developing a relationship with you from the start our drop-out rates are minimal. As we continuously strive to turn students into successful professional practitioners.

Mature applicants with relevant prior experience are welcome and are considered on an individual basis. International students will be interviewed by video conferencing.
