Course Summary School: Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI)

Location: Netherlands, Amsterdam

Education: Master's Degree

The Digital Fashion Technology track is a one-year, full-time programme within the Master of Digital Design. It equips students with the skills to address fashion industry challenges using digital technologies. Through projects and research, students gain skills and knowledge about how to apply technologies like AI, Blockchain, and 3D & Virtual fashion in the fashion industry. The programme emphasizes collaboration with industry and individual projects to shape careers in digital fashion.
Foundation
In the first six weeks, we’ll focus on building a strong foundation in fashion and digital skills. Through a variety of workshops and classes, you’ll explore topics like emerging digital technologies, programming, digital creation, and the history and current state of the (digital) fashion industry. What you work on and deliver will depend on your background and skills. For example, IT graduates might apply their programming skills to learn more about fashion, while fashion graduates will focus on building programming abilities. Alongside this, we’ll get to know each other and align our working methods, values, and skills. By the end of this period, you’ll have created your first prototype(s) and drafted your personal learning plan.
Industry projects In the nine weeks after the foundation period, you’ll take on real-world challenges from industry partners like fashion brands, design agencies, and research groups. Working in teams of about four, you’ll create a digital prototype and reflect on its impact. Does it work as planned? Is it ethically and morally sound? Your role, tasks, and what you learn will be guided by your personal learning plan. This phase wraps up with a two-week “gear-down” period, where you’ll review your progress and prepare for a mid-term check-in.
Capstone project
The second half of the programme focuses on your capstone project. You’ll define a research and practical question and work in an agile way to create a working prototype. You can choose to work in a group or individually for this project. The program finishes with a final review, where we go over everything you’ve completed.
