The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has announced who will be honoured at the institute’s Annual Awards Gala.

The following people have been selected based on their achievement of developing sustainable solutions for the economy: film producer Debra Martin Chase, FIT alumna Brandice Daniel, founder of namesake brand Aerin Lauder and professional tennis player Serena Williams.

Aerin Lauder will receive the Business and Entrepreneurship Award for her entrepreneurial skills and Brandice Daniel will be presented the Outstanding FIT Alumni Award for designing a platform to showcase designers of colour during New York Fashion Week.

Debra Martin Chase will obtain the Vanguard in Entertainment Award for breaking barriers in the film industry and Serena Williams will receive the Fashion Icon Breakthrough Award for investing in companies that welcome diversity and for launching her own clothing brand S by Serna.

The gala will benefit the FIT Foundation, a nonprofit organisation created to facilitate programs and devise new initiatives. It takes place on 13 April and it will be presented by FIT alumni Nina Garcia and the chief creative officer of Michael Kors, Michael Kors.

Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of FIT, said in a statement: “We are so proud to recognise these outstanding leaders—women who have made a profound impact in their respective industries spanning fashion, beauty, sports, and entertainment.

“Each one—in her creativity, determination, drive, and self-confidence—serves as a role model for FIT's talented students who are inspired by their many achievements.”
