Fashion School Fun Facts: De Montfort University

De Montfort University (DMU) is a higher education place in Leicester, England. It focuses on equipping its students with the skills and experience needed to enter the workforce and make a difference in the world.

Origins

Established in 1870, DMU aims to offer its fashion and design students courses that are focused on contemporary culture, digital innovation, industry practice and sustainability at its Vijay Patel Building.

Students will be taught through a combination of theory and practice to give them a more balanced knowledge on how to create a more ethical fashion industry, think critically and solve problems.

What to study?

DMU’s School of Fashion and Textiles has over 1200 students; it provides its students with skills in design practice and fashion business to ensure the next generation of buyers, communicators, designers, and managers positively impact the fashion industry.

There is a selection of degrees for students to choose from, such as a Bachelor in Contour Fashion, Fashion Buying with Design, Fashion Buying with Marketing, Fashion Buying with Merchandising, Fashion Communication and Styling.

In addition to a BA in Fashion Design, Fashion Management, Fashion Textile Design, Footwear Design and Textile Design.

Students can also select a Master in Fashion and Textiles, Fashion Management with Marketing or Textile Design, Technology and Innovation.

News

In 2021, DMU’s School of Fashion and Textiles was named the winner of the Next Generation Learning and Skills Award at the Green Gowns Awards, which rewards the most sustainable projects happening in higher education.

DMU has won this award by developing and integrating co-curricular opportunities, community engagement to address the challenges of the textile industry, curricular change, and innovative research into new materials nationally and internationally.

The university was awarded gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework, a UK government assessment that focuses on the standard of undergraduate teaching in universities and higher education institutions.
