FashionUnited recently spoke to Guido Tattoni, Dean of NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti to discuss the impact of Covid-19, the type of courses the college offers, and the future plans of the institute.

How has the transition from in-house to remote learning been for the school and students?

It has initially been a shock for everyone to face such a big change over basically a weekend. However, we already had in place at that time infrastructure for online content which we used to deliver extra courses to our students, therefore, even if very fast, the transition went smoothly and our students did not miss any class.

How would you describe the NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti student community?

Our student body is very diverse and eclectic, with a strong will to find their identity. In that effort, they are happy to explore unconventional paths.

What kind of courses does NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti offer? What is the focus area?

NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti is an international Academy focusing on arts and design, that offers, in its two campuses in Milan and Rome, academic diplomas equivalent to first and second level university degrees in the fields of design, fashion design, graphics and communication, multimedia arts, new technologies, set design, visual arts, allowing students to continue their studies either within Academies or Universities in Italy and abroad.

What do we need to know about NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti?

NABA programmes are open to students interested in design culture and artistic experimentation: they come from many different Italian regions and about 80 foreign countries, with the most different high-school backgrounds.

NABA’s interdisciplinary methodology is the result of a strong inclination towards innovation and dynamic interaction with the artistic and professional context. In fact, design methods are at the core of the didactic activities, allowing an idea to relate with a real social and market context, and to become an actual product that can be shared, also thanks to the continuously updated expertise of the faculty, that includes professional practitioners and artists.

The strong historical-critical knowledge together with the technical skills shown in materials expertise, techniques, and processes, as well as the teamwork projects developed by students with different backgrounds, and the constant relationship with companies and external institutions, allow students to develop original thoughts and creativity combined with the development of communication abilities: this know-how will accompany them in any educational or professional path.

What are the plans for this year? Any new things coming up?

As we have learned to coexist with the current limitations, our approach to distance learning has become more structural, and we made large investments to guarantee a high-quality online experience. From an academic standpoint, we have also discovered interesting applications and perspectives which are likely to persist even after the emergency.

Do you have any tips for future students who want to study at NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti?

Sure, when working in creativity, don’t look for shortcuts: you may find one, but you’ll be missing the journey, which in many cases is the most interesting part.
