In Picture: Johannes Offerhaus blends math with fashion

Dutch designer Johannes Offerhaus, who was awarded the prestigious Frans Molenaar Couture Award last year, presented his new collection ‘An Experiment with Parabolas’ at Studio 8 in Amsterdam. The new collection, which sees the young designer continue to experiment with shape and form, is inspired by the parabola as Offerhaus takes a mathematical approach to design.

"My work is a great research into shape and movement, in which wearable clothing does not have to be the only end product for me,” says Offerhaus in a statement. "The multiplication of effort and movement results in the folding and unfolding of the installation." Offerhaus brings technology, fashion, and movement together again in his new collection, which consists of five outfits and five art installations that are set in motion by the models. The art installations are constructed from the same material as the models outfits and are complementary in form and colour.

FashionUnited visited Offerhaus in Studio 8, in Amsterdam, where the collection presentation took place in a eggshell space. Visitors were invited to walk between the collection and art install to experience the presentation from all angles.

Johannes Offerhaus graduated cum laude in 2016 from ArtEZ Fashion Design in Arhem. In the same year his graduate collection is awarded the Frans Molenaar Couture Award. For his final collection, he designed an array of rotating skirts, inspired by gravity’s effect on different materials and forms.
