For the first time in history, a design competition was organised which celebrated full-figured fashion. Developed by the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in collaboration with fashion e-tailer Fullbeauty, which sells clothing up until size 7XL, the debut design initiative named Jinwoo Hong and his five sketches the winner.

Hong, who will graduate from his Fashion Design course in 2017, had never before participated in a design competition. The 28-year old FIT student, who is originally from South-Korea, was named the winner and awarded 2.500 dollars, a paid internship at Fullbeauty as well as a feature in the Fullbeauty magazine. “I saw the competition poster on one of the boards at FIT, and set a plan for it,” said Hong on Hellogiggles.com. “I started the collection with a simple idea, but kept in mind the most important aspect: curves. The prints I created for the collection were inspired by the beautiful lines from nature and contour lines of the human face,” he added. Items that Hong designed for the competition include a sleeveless top with a v-neck, a mini skirt and a jacket with a floral pattern.

In total, 31 fifth-semester FIT students entered the competition. The jury, which included singer Meghan Trainor and Fullbeauty´s vice president of design Zahir Babvani, picked Hong´s designs because of its ´fresh and modern feel´. Hong´s class mates Wei Lin and Aleksandra Gosiewski were awarded the second and third prize respectively. Lin could take home 1.500 dollars, and Gosiewski´s work was rewarded 1.000 dollars. Members of the jury also took into account the 50.000 votes that were brought out via the competition's website.
