Redress, the environmental charity working to reduce fashion’s waste, has announced Jessica Chang as the winner and Jin PeiWen as the runner-up of the Redress Design Awards 2021.

The Redress Design Award is in its eleventh competition cycle and it is the largest sustainable fashion design contest. The competition attracted entries from hundreds of applicants from 58 countries and regions, with the judges picking out two main winners.

Fashion designers were challenged to create menswear and womenswear collections from locally sourced waste such as boat covers, damaged camping equipment, school uniforms, secondhand clothing and more.

Sean Cady, vice president of global sustainability and responsibility at VF Corporation, said in a statement: “The Redress Design Award showcases what is possible when emerging designs are given an opportunity to innovate around sustainability. We believe fostering talent and innovation is both good for business and is a necessity for the future, for our planet."

Christina Dean, Redress founder, added: “Fashion’s waste rates are unacceptable and change is not happening fast enough. Whilst recycling technology engineers search in labs for breakthrough recycling solutions and the finance community dither about financing much-needed recycling start-ups, Redress is increasingly promoting hyper-local waste sourcing solutions, spearheaded by fashion designers. Every textile deserves a second life.”

Redress names designers Jessica Chang and Jin PeiWen as its 2021 winners

Jessica Chang from Taiwan has been awarded first place so she will join VF Corporation’s Timberland team to collaborate on a sustainable design project.

Chang said in a statement: “Winning this chance to work with Timberland is a life-changer for me. Entering this complex industry as an emerging designer is daunting because, so often, everywhere we look we see bad news and complexity.

“We know we can bring change. Yet it is hard to magnify our big ideas as start-up designers. The Redress Design Award has given me confidence - we are all in this together to make a positive change!”

Additionally, the Redress Design Award 2021 runner-up prize was given to Jin PeiWen from Taiwan who will now receive mentorship from Orsola de Castro.

The other Redress Design Award 2021 prize winners are:

Hong Kong best prize winner: Lau Sin Yi, Hong Kong

People’s choice winner: Tulika Ranjan, India

Alumni prize winners: Beatrice Bocconi, Italy, and Grace Lant, Hong Kong
