Japanese fashion brand Uniqlo and 35 fashion design and fashion students from the German school AMD Akademie Mode & Design have collaborated to create a joint upcycled collection entitled The New Nomad.

The materials used to create the upcycled collection include defective rain jackets and discarded clothing. As well, the textiles were collected through Re.Uniqlo, a reuse and recycle program, in the German branches of the brand.

Ten looks from the collection were chosen by marketing experts from Uniqlo, teachers from AMD and Parisian designer Lutz Huelle. Five outfits were selected for each flagship store in Berlin and Hamburg.

Antje Drinkuth, dean of fashion and fashion design (BA) in Berlin, said in a statement: “The students were given the task of designing new womenswear or unisex outfits, each of which consisted of 70 percent used clothing. Upcycling should be understood in the sense of upgrading.”

“I focused on pure art in the design process and the result exceeded my expectations. For me, the upcycling project has proven to be an eye-opening experiment that has expanded the limits of my abilities as a designer,” commented Danata Shaikenova, fashion design (BA) student at the AMD college in Berlin.
