The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) has collaborated with jewellery designer Theo Fennell to launch the ‘Circle of Life’ Live Project.

More than 70 students will showcase their technical jewellery making skills by working on a real-life professional jewellery brief set by Theo Fennell.

The brief involves participants designing and manufacturing a ring representing the ‘Circle of Life’ with the help of the jewellery designer. Students must design a ring with emotional and symbolic meaning while also providing comfort and practicality and being commercially relevant.

All participating students will receive feedback from the jewellery designer. However, three winners will have their work displayed at Theo Fennell’s flagship store in Chelsea. In addition, one of the winners will have their designs worn and photographed.

‘Circle of Life’ is part of BAJ’s ongoing Live Project series; it allows students to work on professional jewellery briefs designed by brands.

Kate Rieppel, head of academy at BAJ, said in a statement: “The BAJ is honoured to collaborate with Theo Fennell and proud to be able to offer our students another opportunity to work with a prestigious international brand.

“Our Live Projects are an important way of providing our students with a sense of what it’s like to work on real professional briefs, one of the reasons that BAJ graduates are considered to be highly employable by so many key industry players.”

Theo Fennell added: “It’s inspiring to be able to work with enthusiastic young jewellery makers. We look forward to seeing the creative ways in which BAJ’s students interpret the ‘Circle of Life’ brief.”
