The University of Michigan-Flint will host author Maxine Bédat on Feb. 25 as part of its Common Read program, featuring a reading and a student-led sustainable fashion show tied to her book Unraveled: The Life and Death of a Garment. The events will take place in the Harding Mott University Center KIVA, followed by a “Wear It Forward” fashion showcase in the UCEN’s Happenings Room.

Bédat’s Unraveled — the selected Common Read title — examines the environmental and social impacts of the fashion supply chain, tracing the lifecycle of a garment from production to disposal and addressing issues such as labor, sustainability and consumer behavior.

The sustainable fashion show will feature approximately 12 student designs created from materials sourced through UM-Flint’s Wolverine Essentials program, demonstrating campus engagement with sustainability and design practices.

Organisers say the author visit and fashion show complement the broader Common Read initiative, which brings the campus community together around shared reading and interdisciplinary discussion.
