The Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) has opened Casa IED in Brooklyn, marking the institution’s first space in the United States dedicated to cultural exchange and creative collaboration.

Developed in partnership with Salotto, a Brooklyn-based hub founded by IED alumni and Italian creatives, Casa IED aims to serve as a venue for dialogue, research, and community engagement within the design sector. Located at 84 Withers Street, the space will host public programs including talks, workshops, and exhibitions intended to foster connections between designers and the local creative community.

In a press release Riccardo Balbo, Chief Academic Officer of IED Group, described Casa IED as “a new component designed to engage with the local context, enrich the IED community, share knowledge, and sustain a connection with collective intelligence.”

Salotto, which brings together fourteen Italian designers working across disciplines such as illustration, film, digital media, and graphic design, will collaborate closely with IED to support events and initiatives at the space.

Casa IED’s inaugural program features a talk on “plural intelligence” with Balbo and filmmaker Nicolas Heller, known online as @newyorknico, who is recognized for his documentary storytelling about New York’s creative and cultural landscape.

Founded in 1966, IED is an international higher education network with 11 campuses in Italy, Spain, and Brazil. The institution offers programs in design, fashion, communication, and visual arts, emphasizing social impact and innovation.
