Montclair State University is preparing to stage its annual student runway event, titled “A Moment in Time,” showcasing work from its Fashion Design and Merchandising programme.
The juried fashion show will take place on April 24, presenting garments created by students across multiple course levels, from introductory apparel construction to advanced draping and independent design projects. Organisers describe the theme as an exploration of time as “a constant force of movement and change,” encouraging experimentation with silhouettes and creative concepts.
Produced by the ARTX400 Fashion Show Promotion class under the guidance of professor Seth Howard, the event also serves as a practical learning experience. Students involved in production manage marketing, event planning and backstage coordination, gaining hands-on exposure to industry workflows.
This year’s edition introduces a collaboration with Rocky’s Closet, which provides free professional attire to students. A dedicated runway segment will feature looks styled entirely from the initiative, highlighting accessibility and professional dress.
A panel of industry judges—including James Volpe, Jenni Lee and Utkarsh Gupta—will evaluate the collections, with awards for design excellence and scholarships presented during the evening.
For fashion students and educators, the event highlights how academic runway shows can function as both creative showcases and experiential learning platforms, combining design development with production, styling and event management skills.
