Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD) is highlighting the growing importance of sustainability in fashion, emphasising how responsible design practices are reshaping the industry and the way emerging designers are trained.

In a recent release, the Colorado-based institution noted that sustainable fashion involves reducing waste, minimising environmental impact and considering ethical responsibility throughout the design process—from material sourcing to product longevity. Designers are increasingly exploring recycled or alternative fibres, low-impact dyes and production methods that help limit waste.

Beyond material choices, the concept also encourages designers to prioritise durable construction, versatile garments and timeless silhouettes that extend a product’s lifecycle and reduce the need for frequent replacement. Upcycling and repurposing existing garments are also gaining traction as creative strategies within contemporary design practice.

RMCAD integrates these principles into its Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design programme, offered both on campus and online, where sustainability concepts are taught alongside core design skills. The approach aims to prepare students to balance creativity with environmental responsibility as sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor in the global fashion industry.
