An apparel merchandising student at Auburn University has been recognised by Vogue as one of the most stylish young people in the United States, highlighting the growing intersection of fashion education, journalism and creative storytelling.

Chelsi Banks, who is studying Apparel Merchandising while minoring in Journalism, was selected as one of 50 finalists in Vogue's American Style x Vogue competition. The initiative recognised young people from across all 50 states who represent contemporary American style, with Banks among just two finalists invited to participate in an in-person interview with the publication.

Banks, who hopes to pursue a career in fashion journalism, said she views fashion as a subject worthy of academic study as well as a form of creative expression. Her interest in combining writing with fashion influenced her decision to study at Auburn University, where she has become actively involved in the Department of Consumer and Design Sciences.

Alongside her studies, Banks is a senior editor for Swatch, Auburn's student-run fashion publication, where she edits articles, contributes content and helps produce the annual print magazine. She will serve as managing editor during the 2026–27 academic year and is also taking on a leadership role as a modelling co-chair for the university's annual Fashion Event.

For fashion educators, Banks' experience illustrates how extracurricular publications, student-led events and interdisciplinary study can provide valuable professional experience alongside academic programmes. Her recognition by Vogue also reflects the opportunities available to students who combine fashion knowledge with skills in journalism, editing and digital media.
