Tonight is the opening night for the Royal Opera House’s new ballet, Carbon Ballet, and it features costumes designed by London Fashion Week designer Gareth Pugh. In the first look of the costumes, Pugh has twisted conventional ballet styles with his signature sculptural and architectural designs in a look that will see the dancer’s faces covered in an angular pointed mask, and the traditional ballet flats replaced with moulded black spiked boots, in a dark design that does make you wonder how they will be able to dance in it.

The show choreographed by Wayne McGregor has other famous names taking part to create a fusion of pop, dance, and fashion, including a music scored by Mark Ronson, which comprises of nine love songs, sung by the likes of Boy George, Alison Mosshart of The Kills, and rapper Wale, and three songs that have been orchestrated by singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright.

The show has a limited run of only six shows premiering tonight with the final performance taking place on April 23.
