The Oscars: best fashion moments

The Oscars are almost as important to fashion as it is to film, with
designers and brands wooing actresses month's before the big day to
loan their gowns and tap into the global publicity machine that
surrounds the awards. We are reminded as such that this is a very
serious business indeed.

But business aside, what makes the Oscars so relevant to the fashion
industry is the opportunity to celebrate the craftsmanship of couture,
of design, of beauty, of human skills, not just on a catwalk worn by
16 year old girls, but at an aspirational event for which these
dresses are intended.

Without commenting on the fashion hits and misses of the night, some
of our favourite looks include Gwyneth Paltrow in a white Tom Ford
sheath with matching coat, Rooney Mara in white Givenchy Haute
Couture, and Angelina Jolie in a black velvet Atelier Versace dress
with a daring thigh split.
