Edda Gimnes has been named the winner of the 2016 fashion talent award "Designer for Tomorrow" by department store Peek & Cloppenburg and its online shop Fashion ID.

Gimnes, a graduate of the London College of Fashion, presented her womenswear collection 'The Ragpicker' on Thursday night during the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin and won over the jury, which was led by Patron Alber Elbaz with her hand-drawn prints in black and white.

"I was very impressed by the individuality and creativity of all the collections," said Alber Elbaz in a video message from Paris. He was due to attend the ceremony in person, but had to cancel his attendance at the last minute as he is still recovery from a pneumonia and unable to travel to Berlin.

Instead he watched the livestream of the award show and selected the winner together with the jury board, which included John Cloppenburg, member of the department store's executive committee and Christian Arp, Editor in Chief for Vogue. "I especially see a lot of potential in the collection by Edda Gimnes. She captured my imagination and I’m keen to find out how her talent will evolve," he added.

Gimnes, who is right-handed, made instinctive drawings using her left hand which were inspired by her own eclectic assortment of found objects. As part of prize she will travel to Paris to visit Alber Elbaz as part of the one-year sponsorship program. She follows in the footsteps of the competitions previous winner, Mareike Massing.

Since being voted the "Designer for Tomorrow" last year, Massing has gone on to gain extensive industry experience through her trip to New York and internship at Jake*s Collection in Düsseldorf, where she worked alongside the creative team to develop her own capsule collection. The ceremony marked the grand finale of her sponsorship programme and Massing presented her new collection, "No. 1."

"For me, DfT has been a very enriching experience and I have gained many valuable contacts for the next stage in my career," said Massing. reflecting on the past year.
