The average spend in apparel at U.S. households comes in at 1,803 dollars per year, according to a recent survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The average American household earns around 74,664 dollars per year before taxes, according to the BLS 2016 Consumer Expenditure Survey, the latest full year for which finalized data is available. This includes wages and salaries, as well as income from self-employment, Social Security and other retirement sources, interest, dividends, rental income, and more.

According to the latest BLS data, Americans will invest 2.4 percent of their annual income in renewing their wardrobes, turning apparel into the 10 largest item on the spend list by dollar amount.

Food (7,203 dollars), transportation (9,049 dollars), healthcare (4,612 dollars) and entertainment (2,913) complete the top 5 expenses. Contributions to pension plans and personal taxes also take a significant portion of the household’ income.
