London - Nina Nitsche, the long-term first assistant and former successor to Martin Margiela, has left Maison Margiela after close to two decades to take up the design reins at Vetements.

Nitsche has been appointed Vetements Collection Director, according to reports from WWD, after working under the wing of John Galliano. In her new role, Nitsche will be in charge of the design team under the direction of Demna Gvasalia, founder and creative director of the Paris-based label.

“Now it’s becoming adult,” said Gvasalia, who previously founded the collective design label in 2014, after serving for three years at Maison Martin Margiela. It was there, and during a brief tenure working in the design studio at Louis Vuitton that he is said to have honed his unique garment-driven approach to collection design.

News of the appointment comes before the Georgian-born designer is set to unveil his latest collection for luxury fashion house Balenciaga, which is set to unveil its Spring/Summer 2017 collection in Paris on Sunday.
