Famous costume designs from the silver screen are being showcased at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum centered as the focal point of the Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition.

The show opened in February and will run until April 25, featuring over 100 on-screen outfits. The popular exhibit brings memorable film characters back to life by showcasing the most iconic movie ensembles. Twenty of last year’s most noteworthy films are being honored and represented in the project including “The Great Gatsby,” “Big Eyes,” “Selma,” “Maleficent,” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

FIDM alumni shine in Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibit

Some of FIDM alumni are included in the spotlight by sharing some of their costume designs. The pharaoh’s outfit from “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” as well as the outfit Ben Affleck wore in “Gone Girl” were designed by FIDM graduates (Marlene Stewart and Trish Summerville respectively). Mary Claire Hannan, a fellow FIDM graduate, designed the casual khakis and button-down costumes for the film “The Fault In Our Stars.” Along with the FIDM alumni was Soyon An who was in charge of costume design for hip-hop dance film “Step Up All In.”

Founded in 1969, the FIDM Museum is a tool today that L.A. locals can visit to further observe historic fashion including textiles, accessories, art, technology, and more. The exhibits provide resources to the public so that students, researchers, and designers are able to experience fashion in an exciting, new learning environment.
