This October, The Jewish Museum will unveil “Mood of the moment: Gaby Aghion and the house of Chloé,” an exhibition chronicling the life and design legacy of Chloé founder Gaby Aghion. Set to open on October 13, 2023 in New York City, The Jewish Museum announced the exhibition earlier this week—the first of its kind in recognition of Aghion.

The fashion house has a long history of creative ingenuity, being the starting point for trailblazing designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and Phoebe Philo. Aghion, who is believed to have coined the phrase “prêt-à-porter”, launched Chloé in 1952 in Paris, starting what would be a 70-year legacy that will be showcased in over 150 archival pieces at the museum.

The Egyptian-born designer’s passion for Parisian style and revolutionary attitude toward luxury fashion created a line of modern, breezy pieces that rejected the time’s rigidity of haute couture; ease-of-wear values that the brand continues to uphold today. Never-before-seen sketches and documents from the Chloé Archive will also be revealed at the exhibition, giving a glimpse into the inner workings of Aghion in the early days of the heritage house.

“Mood of the moment: Gaby Aghion and the house of Chloé” will be on display at The Jewish Museum from October 13, 2023—February 18, 2024.
