The Aquarium of the Pacific, located in Long Beach, CA, is throwing its annual Urban Ocean Festival this weekend starting 2 May. The festival includes its Trashin’ Fashion Show, that features clothing made from recycled items to highlight how fashion can accurately portray impact unsustainable materials have on the environment.

The fashion show involves designs that intricately meshes pieces of trash into clothing for the models to wear on the runway. The Trashin’ Fashion Show designers are finalists who have been selected to showcase their designs during the festival.

The idea of the show is to gain the attention of attendees and demonstrate how issues such as pollution, waste, and sustainability affect our community today. “If you look at a painting or listen to a poem, you’re much more apt to have an emotional reaction than you would to a science paper,” Jerry Schubel, Aquarium president and CEO, told Press Telegram. The attire is made completely from recycled materials in order to raise the growing issues of ocean pollution. Pieces used for the designs include soda cans, plastic materials, coffee filters, styrofoam cups, paper, and more.

The Festival will also featured an art exhibit, live music, and sustainable cooking demonstrations for its guests. The 5th annual eco-fest is known for its annual examples of how the way we live affects our oceans globally.
