Business

Carmen March has become a casualty of the coronavirus. The designer has announced she's shuttering her eponymous ready-to-wear label due to the economic impact the business suffered from coronavirus. Coronavirus is hitting fashion and apparel industries particularly hard, but independent designers seem to be suffering the worst out of anybody.

The brand has said they will cease all operations on May 30, although they didn't cite specific reasons why, but with small store buys for the year and temporarily shuttered retail locations, the why is quite obvious. March counted Net-a-Porter among her stockists, but even they can't deliver orders right now.

Organizations around the world are coming up with ways to help independent designers stave off the economic fallout from coronavirus. In America, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue have launched A Common Thread, a fund to help independent designers stay afloat through the coronavirus. In France, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode is setting up an action plan to help support emerging designers and help them figure out how to navigate government aid.
