Carter's Q3 operating income surges to 55.8 million dollars amid corporate restructuring

US kidswear company Carter’s, Inc. (Carter’s) has posted a 91.7 percent jump in third-quarter operating income to 55.80 million dollars, up from 29.10 million dollars in the prior-year period. Consolidated net sales for the three months ended in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 decreased 0.7 percent to 752.50 million dollars, compared to 757.80 million dollars in the corresponding quarter of fiscal 2025.

The company has also announced a strategic realignment of its corporate leadership structure to support its long-term growth strategy. The structural evolution establishes new dedicated roles across commercial operations and operational execution, alongside newly expanded responsibilities across product design, international business and brand building. The reshuffled executive committee will report directly to chief executive officer and president Sharon Price John, who took the helm of Carter’s in June 2026.

Brand refresh and strategic realignment

International net sales increased 4.5 percent, while the US Retail division held comparable to the previous year, achieving a 0.4 percent rise in comparable net sales. US Wholesale revenue dropped 3.8 percent. Operating margin expanded to 7.4 percent from 3.8 percent, while adjusted operating income climbed 44.6 percent to 56.90 million dollars, yielding an adjusted operating margin of 7.6 percent. Net income reached 36.60 million dollars, or one dollar per diluted share, up from 11.60 million dollars, or 0.32 dollars per diluted share, in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. On an adjusted basis, net income stood at 37.50 million dollars, representing 1.03 dollars per diluted share.

During the quarter, the apparel group introduced its first comprehensive brand initiative in 25 years for its flagship Carter’s label, incorporating an updated logo and a refreshed brand promise of “let every child's light shine”.

“I am pleased with the significant progress of the company’s profitability improvement initiatives in the third quarter, especially in light of delivering slight growth in U.S. Retail comparative sales and overall net sales that were slightly above our outlook amid an uneven macroeconomic environment,” said Sharon Price John.

Dividend distributions for the third quarter totaled 9.10 million dollars at 0.25 dollars per common share, bringing nine-month dividend payouts to 27.50 million dollars. No shares were repurchased during the nine-month period.

Full-year 2026 outlook moderated amid economic headwinds

Reflecting ongoing pressure on household discretionary budgets from economic and geopolitical uncertainties, Carter’s moderated its top-line outlook for the full 52-week fiscal year 2026.

The company projects net sales of 2.91 billion dollars to 2.93 billion dollars, compared to 2.89 billion dollars in the 53-week fiscal 2025. Adjusted operating income is forecast between 178.00 million dollars and 187.00 million dollars, representing low-single-digit to mid-single-digit growth against 176.00 million dollars in fiscal 2025. Full-year adjusted diluted earnings per share are projected at 3.05 dollars to 3.23 dollars, compared to 3.47 dollars in the prior year. Operating cash flow is anticipated to reach 240.00 million dollars to 250 million dollars, alongside capital expenditures of 50 million dollars.

For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, comprising 13 weeks, net sales are expected to range from 860 million dollars to 880.00 million dollars, down from 925 million dollars in the 14-week fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Adjusted operating income is estimated at 74 million dollars to 83 million dollars, with adjusted diluted earnings per share projected between 1.37 dollars and 1.55 dollars.

New appointments across product, commercial and brand divisions

As part of the realignment, Carter’s has appointed Maria Gemzell to the role of chief product officer, effective in early 2027. Gemzell joins the group from Swedish fashion retailer H&M, where she oversaw strategic and new product initiatives at the company headquarters in Stockholm. In her new position, Gemzell will lead design, merchandising, licensing and product development across both wholesale and direct-to-consumer (D2C) channels.

To address channel-agnostic consumer habits and unify North American commercial operations across the US, Canada and Mexico, Carter’s has created the position of chief commercial officer. Allison Peterson, who joined the retailer in 2024, will take on the new role, overseeing both North American retail and wholesale operations. In connection with this commercial consolidation, chief sales officer Julie D’Emilio has decided to retire from the company after 20 years, remaining as an advisor through the end of the year to support the transition.

Concurrently, Sarah Crockett, who joined Carter’s in 2025, has been named chief brand officer. Crockett will focus on aligning marketing, consumer engagement and brand strategy with the group’s merchandising and go-to-market channels.

Expansion into international markets and supply chain changes

Emily Evert, chief strategy and business development officer, has been assigned an expanded remit. Alongside her current strategy portfolio, Evert will oversee a unified global consumer insights division and lead Carter’s international business segment.

Operationally, Carter’s is establishing a standalone chief operating officer (COO) role focused on modernizing operations and scaling infrastructure through technology and data. A formal search process for the position has commenced. Richard Westenberger, who previously held the dual title of chief financial officer and COO, will continue as chief financial officer.

Westenberger and Antonio Robinson, chief administrative and compliance officer and corporate secretary, will remain part of the go-forward leadership committee alongside the newly appointed functional leads.

Separately, chief supply chain officer Karen Smith will retire in March 2027 following five years with Carter’s and more than 35 years in the apparel sector.
