Consumer prices (August)

Mexico's annual inflation rose to 3.26 percent in August 2026 from 3.12 percent in July, according to Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Prices in the Ropa y calzado (clothing and footwear) division rose 2.16 percent year-on-year, up from 1.60 percent in July, and remained below headline inflation. On the month, clothing and footwear prices rose 0.57 percent, while core inflation stood at 3.88 percent.

Retail sales (July and August)

INEGI retail data are available up to July. Real revenue at retailers of textiles, costume jewellery, clothing accessories and footwear rose 2.0 percent YoY in July, according to preliminary data from INEGI's Monthly Survey of Commercial Companies (EMEC). Across all retail, seasonally adjusted real revenue fell 0.1 percent from June but was 2.0 percent higher than a year earlier.

Same-store sales at member chains of the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (ANTAD) rose 1.7 percent YoY in nominal terms in August, below headline inflation, while nominal total-store sales rose 4.2 percent. ANTAD noted that August 2026 had one Friday fewer than August 2025.

Consumer sentiment (August)

The consumer confidence indicator compiled by INEGI and the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) rose 1.0 point to 46.1 in August, seasonally adjusted, level with August 2025. All five components rose on the month, according to INEGI. The supplementary indicator for households' current ability to buy clothing, shoes and food compared with a year earlier rose 0.9 points to 44.8.

Monetary policy and currency (August)

Banxico left its target for the overnight interbank rate unchanged at 6.50 percent in August. The dollar averaged 17.0664 pesos in August, down from 17.4607 pesos in July, according to Banxico's FIX reference rate, a 2.3 percent rise in the value of the peso. Compared with August 2025, when the dollar averaged 18.7063 pesos, the peso was 9.6 percent stronger, lowering the peso cost of dollar-priced imports.

Macro context (August)

Remittance inflows to Mexico fell 3.6 percent YoY to 5.45 billion dollars in August, according to preliminary Banxico data, after rising 3.0 percent in July.
