Guess is fined 65,000 dollars for workplace safety violations

Los Angeles - Women’s fashion brand Guess recently has been under fire for safety violations. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) just cited one of the retailer’s factory stores for two safety workplace hazards.

One of the infringements was due to a blocked emergency exit in the factory facility at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Mashantucket, Conn. The second violation was because of an improperly stored stock which put the employees of the store “at risk of burns, lacerations and being struck by falling objects,” as reported by WWD. The fines for the workplace standard violations total for approximately 65,000 dollars. These issues caused for OSHA to come in and investigate the building further.

OSHA fines Guess retailer for workplace hazards

On March 3, OSHA began an inspection and found multiple hazards, according to the publication. Through this inspection, the organization found various infringements including more obstructions of emergency exits, improper storing, inaccessible electrical panels and more. “These were obvious and easily preventable conditions that placed store employees needlessly at risk,” Warren Simpson, area director of OSHA, told WWD. Also, this isn’t the company’s first violation when it comes to workplace hazards. These violations were cited in 2013 at the Guess store at Jersey Gardens Mall in New Jersey.

The Los Angeles-based retailer is known for offering contemporary clothing, accessories, and handbags. Currently, the retailer operates approximately 484 locations. With the newest violation, the company will have 15 business days to comply to its citations, according to WWD. If the company does not comply, the retailer will also have the option to pay fine or contest findings with OSHA’s area director.
