Last week’s storming of Washington’s Capitol that left five dead and a path of destruction in its wake, has left retailers weary of America’s inauguration of a new president next week.

Store chains including Macy’s, DSW and Comfort One Shoes are reportedly bracing for a potential uprising and riots. Armed protests should be expected at all 50 state capitals said a bulletin from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Retailers are keeping an eye on developments and potential damage to stores in the days leading up to Inauguration Day, as violent mobs and armed protests are a realistic turn of events.

“The health and safety of our customers, associates, and the communities we serve is always our No. 1 priority,” spokesperson for DSW parent Designer Brands Inc told Footwear News. “Knowing that more protests are planned for this week, we are monitoring the situation nationally and on a state level, so we are prepared to implement appropriate safety measures if need be.”

AMacy’s spokesperson told FN, “The safety of our colleagues and customers is our top priority. Our teams are closely monitoring potential issues in nearby locations, and we will take precautions as necessary.”
