Reitmans Q2 gross profit improves, net revenue down 1.9 percent
Canadian specialty apparel retailer Reitmans (Canada) Limited (RCL) has reported its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2027 ended August 1, 2026, highlighting an improvement in gross profit margin despite a slight decline in overall net revenues.
Net revenues for the quarter fell 1.9 percent to 211.8 million Canadian dollars compared to the same period in the prior year, primarily driven by lower transaction volume and reduced clearance activity. Comparable sales, which include e-commerce net revenues, decreased 1.5 percent. Retail store performance remained resilient, supported by double-digit sales growth at flagship locations, including the converted Reitmans concept store at Carrefour Laval and the expanded RW&CO flagship at Toronto Eaton Centre. E-commerce revenues declined due to a more selective approach to promotions and clearance events.
Gross profit rose to 123.9 million Canadian dollars, up 1.1 million Canadian dollars from the previous year, while gross profit margin expanded by 160 basis points to 58.5 percent. The expansion was attributed to tighter inventory management, lower markdowns and stronger regular-price selling.
Operating costs weigh on earnings
Despite the margin improvement, higher operating expenses impacted overall profitability. Selling, general and administrative expenses increased due to elevated freight costs, store wages, rent, advertising investments and early development costs for a loyalty program.
RCL also recorded strategic transformation expenses of 1.1 million Canadian dollars related to employee termination benefits and consulting fees associated with restructuring its operating structure. Consequently, adjusted EBITDA declined by 2.6 million Canadian dollars to 18.8 million Canadian dollars.
Net earnings stood at 10.1 million Canadian dollars, or 0.20 Canadian dollars per basic and diluted share, compared to 13.1 million Canadian dollars, or 0.26 Canadian dollars per share, in the second quarter of fiscal 2026.
“Our second quarter reflected deliberate, strategic execution across our brands,” said RCL president and chief executive officer Andrea Limbardi. “While net revenues were modestly below last year, we meaningfully improved gross margin through stronger regular-price selling, a more disciplined promotional strategy and tighter inventory management.”
Limbardi added that brand perception initiatives, such as the 100th anniversary campaign for Reitmans and a partnership with the WNBA team Toronto Tempo, generated encouraging results during the period.
Liquidity position and share buyback program
As of August 1, 2026, RCL maintained working capital of 149.2 million Canadian dollars, which included 152.7 million Canadian dollars in cash. This compares to working capital of 149.6 million Canadian dollars and cash of 125.3 million Canadian dollars as of August 2, 2025. The company had no significant long-term debt outside of lease liabilities, and no amounts were drawn under its bank credit facilities.
During the year-to-date period ended August 1, 2026, RCL repurchased and cancelled 295,300 Class A non-voting shares for an aggregate cash consideration of 0.6 million Canadian dollars under its normal course issuer bid (NCIB).
On July 30, 2026, the company received approval from the TSX Venture Exchange to renew its NCIB. Under the renewed terms, RCL may acquire up to 3,000,000 Class A non-voting shares, representing approximately 10 percent of its public float, between August 5, 2026, and August 4, 2027. Repurchases remain capped at 2 percent of the issued and outstanding Class A shares in any 30-day period.
