Today Sotheby's presented Alchemy: Art x Design, an exhibition curated by interior designer Delphine Krakoff and her husband, fashion designer Reed Krakoff. The exhibit combined art and decorative objects from a range of time periods into one space on the tenth floor of Sotheby's.

Jodi Pollack, Head of Sotheby's 20th Century Design, said, "I am excited to collaborate with Delphine and Reed as they bring a fresh and holistic vision, sparked by their love of the creative process, their design expertise and their sophisticated collector’s eye to our Important Design sale exhibition."

"The hardest part of the exhibit was using the space," Reed Krakoff said. The husband and wife duo, along with Sotheby's team, were given 24 hours to build the entire exhibit from the ground up. Sotheby's usually has very quick turnaround times from one exhibit to the next, but it's an impressive feat nonetheless.

The exhibit uses property drawn primarily from Sotheby's Important Design sale. The theme behind the exhibit is the idea of exploring art and design and the ways in which they can inform and inhabit each other. Delphine and Reed Krakoff worked to create spaces where pieces would be arranged in dynamic juxtapositions of material, color, texture, and mood.

The selections include European Pre-war and Post-war Designs from Jean-Michel Frank, Diego Giacometti, Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Pierre Chareau, and Eugene Printz just to name a few. The exhibition is currently on view to the public at Sotheby's York Avenue headquarters in NYC, and ends on December 18.

In a statement, Delphine and Reed Krakoff said, “While the installation will evolve through the process, our projects are always an amalgam of both of our tastes. This evolution is what creates our visual aesthetic. The Important Design sale offers a wide range of works such as the monumental ceramic sculpture by Jouve that occupied a space in the artist's own garden in the South of France; a breathtaking cabinet by Fontana Arte, clad in cobalt mirrored glass; an iconic bronze and glass Moorish chandelier by Tiffany Studios; and a rare and massive bronze "branch" mirror by Lalanne, acquired directly from the artist.”

As for how he sees this intersection between fashion and art, Krakoff replied, "It's all the same. Whether you are doing fashion, art, or furniture, you have to think about proportion, color, scale, and motif."
