Peru has a history of textiles going back 5,000 years, to Pre-Incan times. Today, Peru is still home to some of the finest raw materials in the world…Including Alpaca and Pima Cotton. Peru is known for its expertise in these natural fibers as well as Tanguis Cotton, organics and mixing them into a wide variety of blends with other natural and synthetic fibers. One of main draws of manufacturing in Peru is the level of quality.

Alpaca, worn by Incan royalty, was considered the “gold of the Andes.” Peru currently produces 80% of the world’s Alpaca yarn. Those in the know appreciate Alpaca for its inherent attributes: softness, lightweight, it’s breathable and completely hypoallergenic. Plus, no Alpaca’s are ever harmed for their fleece.

Peruvian Pima Cotton has an unparalleled fineness of handle while also being extremely durable and dyes beautifully. It’s harvested by hand, resulting in brighter white fibers and making it environmentally sound.

The Peruvian textile and manufacturing industries not only have a positive impact on the lives of the farmers it supports, but also all the people in the production chain, from yarn makers to spinners and weavers to the factory employees, too. Peru is a model country, setting the standard with quality of life for its workers through its high labor standards.

In addition to social responsibility, Peru and its factories place a premium on being sustainably oriented and environmentally friendly. The majority of Peruvian factories have international certifications, such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) and Fair Trade certifications, among others.

The manufacturing sector in Peru is technologically advanced with respect to machines used, development and processes, while also staying true to its roots and supporting local artisans with hand-knitting. A real mix of the modern with age-old craftsmanship.

Peruvian manufacturers provide competitive prices. On top of that, Peru has DUTY-FREE status when shipping into the USA, Canada and Europe, another cost advantage for the international market.

These are just a few reasons why International brands such as Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger produce in Peru and why designers, fabric and production teams from around the world descend on Lima each April to attend PERU MODA.
