Concept Korea, which began in 2010 as a way to help emerging Korean designers gain attention in the US market, decided to take advantage of men's fashion week and stage a runway show for DBYD and Ordinary People. The result was fairly impressive. DBYD, which is the menswear label of Korean designer Kang Dong Jun, gave us a taste of the urban athleisure wear that has become so popular in America.

DBYD is known as the diffusion line of Jun's signature line D. GNAK. DBYD is known for being chromatic in color with a younger more casual tone. Jun certainly saw the current trend in men's wear right now with streetwear and athleisure being so major, so he gave us a collection filled with black, white, grey, green, and yellow, keeping most of the colors very understated and avoiding anything too loud. His bright shades of yellow would have to be the biggest pop of color in his collection.

His spring/summer '16 collection is titled "Loner", with sartorial inspiration coming from the boy who likes staying home alone rather than being with his friends. He's the type of boy who has an active imagination, and his imagination is reflected in the patterns. While the patterns were also very understated, it was true to what your typical American man would want: nothing too loud.

DBYD and Ordinary People stage men's runway shows

If DBYD is trying to find their place in the American men's market, they certainly know how to play to their audience. Ordinary People on the other hand, was anything short of ordinary, and was more flamboyant and playful than DBYD. Their collection included glitter striped giant sweaters, preppy jackets, and sporty separates that touched on the line between collegiate school boy and varsity athlete.

Ordinary People's collection was titled "Active Maestro" with the theme being the revolution of sportism. In a market where athleisure and sporty is taking over men's wear, Ordinary People hit the mark on the head. For them it was about elevating sportism though, none of that casual joggers and t-shirts stuff.

With the Asian market becoming increasingly major in the fashion industry, it is imperative to give notice to the rising talent out there. Concept Korea has successfully managed to take advantage of men's fashion week and do that with two great men's wear shows. This is just the beginning for these two designers as they get their name out there in the American market.
