David Hart takes us to Paris for NYFW: Men's

After several seasons of showing at the American's in Paris showcase of CFDA designers at Paris Fashion Week, David Hart found inspiration from the men of Paris. This season, the designer brought European influence to his usual off-the-beaten-path, but still stylish menswear by decking out his models in berets, blazers, striped sweaters and painted jeans for New York Men's Day. While at first sight, Hart seemed to just be paying an homage to Parisian chic, his collection was also a commentary on the exodus of American brands and designers who have chosen to defect from New York Fashion Week and show in Paris.

Designers and brands including Thom Browne, Proenza Schouler, Joseph Altuzarra and Monique Lhuillier, who were once some of the most coveted shows at NYFW, all defected to Paris last year. Where does that leave the state of American fashion and New York Fashion Week? Hart appears to think we just need a little Parisian inspiration over here if we want to make Fashion Week great again.

The collection also drew inspiration from French New Wave cinema, hence the heavy stripe detailing. While the Ugly American Syndrome was intended to be part of his theme, nothing really read as obnoxious tourist. However, that didn't mean he didn't create a strong collection for fall/winter 2018.

Hart taught us that the American man shouldn't be afraid of color in winter. After all, the Parisians don't seem to be. Perhaps we should dare to be a little more like them for the sake of bringing back the wow that is American fashion?
