For quite some time now, a lot of products have branded their merchandise as “California-designed.” This may be true for some, however, some of these labels have been found to be misleading.

The reason these labels can be misleading is due to the fact that some of these products were made overseas. However, the California Fashion Association (CFA) has worked to make sure their products are labeled appropriately. Due to label laws, although manufacturers can label their products “Designed in California,” any other countries of origin must also be labeled, as reported by Apparel News. “The law is very clear for sewn-in labeling and separate hangtags,” CFA President Ilse Metchek told Apparel News. The text for “Designed in California” as well as the country of origin must be in the same size text, according to California law.

The “Designed in California” tag was recently trademarked by the CFA. The new finalized hangtag allows for apparel manufacturers to use it in order to show where their garments are designed. Because of this trademark tag, it can still be separate from the country of origin tag. However, the country of origin must be printed in same text size on the sewn-in label. These laws make it easier for apparel consumers and buyers to see exactly where their product is coming from in terms of design and manufacturing.
