Edmund Ooi, a Belgian-born Malaysian men's wear designer whose expertise includes avante-garde techniques, presented his spring/summer '16 at Milk Studios in NYC's Meatpacking District yesterday, and it was certainly something that no one had ever seen before. His first look was a white bandeau top and white knit underwar that left very little to the imagination. For Ooi, who is just beginning to get the attention of the American market, it was quite a way to open a show.

He certainly gave a level of shock factor to really get the audience's attention and say "here I am". The looks that proceeded include a jacket with white shorts and a black knit top, a blazer, with a white sweater and red shorts, and a white oxford tank with knit shorts just to name a few. While the collection was very out there in terms of styling, it remained true to Ooi's commitment to his avant-garde aesthetic.

Avant-garde and men's wear aren't two things people usually see going hand-in-hand, but, somehow, Ooi managed to make it work. The most out there pieces from his collection would have to be the orange bondage top which looked like something straight out of a BDSM shop. Ooi is clearly a designer that believes in seeing how confined clothes can make the male body, and with the era of the slim fit, androgynous, and feminine in he's chosen an excellent time to explore that concept.

The show closed with a white coat, black knit tank, and black underwear that displayed Ooi's ability for expert craftsmanship, detail in his structuring, and clothes that celebrate the architecture of the male body. As Ooi prepares to try and make a name for himself in America he certainly knows how to get attention, that is for sure. As an up-and-coming designer he can really make a name for himself as a true master of avant-garde design in men's wear.
