Frida Kahlo’s distinctive style is as famous and inspiring as her works of art, which is why the Brooklyn Museum has made sure to display clothing and accessories alongside her paintings, drawings and photographs in the largest US exhibition in ten years dedicated to the Mexican artist, set to be held from February 8 until May 12.

Titled Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving, the exhibition will display a collection of Kahlo's personal possessions including Tehuana clothing, precolonial jewelry, and hand-painted corsets and prosthetics used by the painter during her lifetime. Those objects were rediscovered and inventoried in 2004, after being locked away at Casa Azul (The Blue House), Kahlo’s longtime home with Diego Rivera in Mexico City, since her death in 1954. Rivera’s will stipulated that those artifacts shouldn't be disclosed until 15 years after his death.

“The objects shed new light on how Kahlo crafted her appearance and shaped her personal and public identity to reflect her cultural heritage and political beliefs, while also addressing and incorporating her physical disabilities”, says the museum on its website, where tickets are already available for sale.
