The youthful, on-trend retailer Forever 21 recently mixed in a new type of creative design into their apparel. A Los Angeles-based graffiti artist known by his pseudonym “Alec Monopoly” recently teamed with the retail chain in order to create a capsule collection.

A New York-born native, the artist gained recognition for his street art through his usage of stencils, spray paint, varnishes, and epoxies. Similarly to other street artists, Monopoly ironically used iconic pop culture characters in his art once relocating to the West Coast. “It wasn’t until I moved to L.A. that I merged my graffiti art with my studio art,” said Monopoly. Fittingly, he is best known for his depiction of the Monopoly Man character. “I’m very inspired by Andy Warhol I love his bright colors and repetition of imagery,” said Monopoly of his graffiti art. The artist returned to popular nostalgic concepts for the collection. Throughout the Forever 21 x Alec Monopoly collaboration, characters such as Richie Rich and Casper the Friendly Ghost are recreated and incorporated in fashion. Using cartoons and giving them an edgy twist, the collection reflects a street-inspired style. The collaboration includes pieces such as t-shirts, crewneck sweatshirts, hoodies, totes, and other accessories. The new collection will unveil on August 27 at the Forever 21 Times Square location.

Forever 21 is a Los Angeles-based chain of fashion retailers located throughout the world. Founders Do Won Chang and Jin Sook Chang established the on-the-go fashion company in 1984 in Highland Park. The brand’s reputation is known for trendy merchandise as well as economical pricing. In 2014, the company reported annual revenue upwards of 3.8 billion dollars.
