Every week, FashionUnited selects the most interesting reads about the fashion industry published across US and international news outlets. Here’s what you may have missed this week:

Is there a future for fashion magazine editors?

This week has been marked by a tsunami of layoffs in American media. Buzzfeed has dismissed 200 employees, while Verizon, the telephone company that owns Yahoo, HuffPost and Techcrunch, is letting go of 800 people. Last but not least, 400 employees were fired at Gannet, the company behind USA Today and hundreds of local newspapers.

Fashion media is no different. Vogue has cut 24 jobs since June last year, while Glamour Magazine has seen its last print edition this January. The publication will go on as an online player only. Still, many people still dream of working as a fashion magazine editor. What’s it like to hold that position today and what does the future hold for those following such a career path? Find out in this article by Fashionista.

How the Kardashians have changed the fashion industry

Love them or hate them, the Kardashian/Jenner sisters are among the most powerful names in fashion today. Online retailers such as Boohoo, Pretty Little Thing, Nasty Gal and Fashion Nova have risen to popularity by offering affordable versions of outfits worn by the Kardashians. With their ultrasexy aesthetic, the sisters have helped to popularize trends like corsets, crop tops, bodycon dresses and latex. They have also left their mark in the beauty industry, popularizing contouring sets, fake eyelashes and matte liquid lipsticks. Formerly dismissed as “trashy pop culture icons”, the Kardashians have become so influential they are now accepted in high fashion circles. Kim Kardashian has graced the cover of Vogue magazine, won an CFDA award as influencer of the year and can often be seen in the front row of luxury fashion shows. Kendall Jenner is now the highest paid model in the world, also working with the biggest names in luxury. Want to understand just how powerful they are and how much money the Kardashian business generates? Then read the piece published this week by The Guardian.

Fashion’s growing appetite for interiors

Zara, H&M, River Island, Urban Outfitters and now even Asos. More and more affordable fashion retailers are venturing into homeware and, according to this article, the trend is here to stay. Why? Social media has caused people to open the doors of their homes to the outside world. It doesn’t suffice to have an enviable fashion sense anymore, interiors must be stylish and trendy as well. In sum, the “shelfie” is the new “selfie”.
