When Gap first launched in 1969, it set out to disrupt the industry with its progressive and inclusive approach, creating pieces meant for the modern wardrobe. Fast-forward to 2019, a year that marks the American brand’s 50th anniversary. In celebration of this milestone, the contemporary brand has teamed up with the Los Angeles-based retrofit and repair company Atelier & Repairs to create a limited-edition capsule collection of curated and customized vintage Gap pieces.

Conceptualized by Atelier & Repairs founder Maurizio Donadi, the collection was created out of a mutual commitment to sustainability and up-cycling worn-in pieces. Each piece features one-of-a-kind details such as patchwork, colorful stitching, embroidery, and more.

“At Gap, sustainability is important to our brand and to our customers,” Gap’s Head of Adult Design, John Caruso, said in a statement. “We are committed to reducing the environmental impacts of product manufacturing, and [this] announcement marks the latest step in our journey to integrate more product innovation across our portfolio. This partnership with Atelier & Repairs allows us to reinterpret and reimagine our classic styles, lengthening the product life cycle.”

FashionUnited had the chance to visit the Atelier & Repairs factory in Los Angeles to preview a selection of the Gap x Atelier & Repairs capsule, where Donadi and business partner Marissa Ma shared more on the collection. Ma shared with FashionUnited that while the brand initially started out of the need to put creative spins on clothing, giving vintage clothing new life.

The Gap x Atelier & Repairs collection ranges from 58 USD to 498 USD and is available now in select Gap stores and online.

This capsule collection includes everything from vintage denim jeans and jackets to up-cycled cotton T-shirts, sweatshirts, outerwear, and leather jackets.
